In baptism, at least two things happen: (1) a Christian publicly identifies with Jesus and his people, and (2) a church publicly affirms the believer and receives him or her into Jesus’s family. At the Lord’s Supper, Christians renew their commitment both to Jesus and one another; they affirm their ongoing faith in Jesus and their mutual membership in his family. Together, baptism and the Lord’s Supper identify who is “in” and who is “out” in a local church—they show us who belongs to the family.
